5 Welding tips – Tip size

SIZE DOES MATTER

One of the biggest welding maintenance mistakes we see is people using the same size tip and same size wire together.

That brings us to the subject of ‘fusing’.Having a fused contact tip is frustrating! The older the wire, liner and tips become, the more likely they are to fuse.

We have a very simple trick to ensure your welding experience runs a little smoother….

Always choose a contact tip that is a size larger than the wire you are using. Let’s say you have a 0.9mm wire, you would then go up to a 1.0mm contact tip.

Let’s talk about why…..

Having a slightly bigger tip allows….

1.Clearance between the welding wire and the contact tip therefore giving you longer tip life.

2.Less chance of contaminants fusing to the inside of the tip. If contamination happens it will cause the wire to ‘grab’ as it goes through the contact tip.

Did you know? The wire only has to make contact with the tip as it comes through the gun welder to create the arc.

Remember! Always use a good quality contact tip! The machined surfaces inside these tips are a higher standard which means the wire will pass through the tip easier.
