Magnets – Not just child’s play. Handy workshop tools
Table of Contents
The Simple Magnet. Strongest tool in the shed.
We all learned about magnets back in school – iron filings, north and south poles, sticking a paperclip to the end of your ruler for fun. Having negative on negative force be with you wars with your mate. Them were the days. For a principle so simple, they’re behind some of the most useful gear in the workshop today.

At Red Shed, we’ve stocked up on a range of magnetic tools — and they’re seriously handy. Whether it’s cleanup, lifting, holding, or hanging, these tools take something we all thought we understood in science class and crank it up to jobsite level.
Here’s what I’ve found myself using more and more – and why we reckon every workshop should have at least a few of these in reach.
Magnetic Super Sweeper
This thing is worth its weight in bolts. If you’ve ever dropped a handful of screws or rolled a grinder too close to some swarf, you know the pain of crawling around trying to clean up the mess. The Magnetic Super Sweeper is a beast – I just wheel it around the site or shop floor and it picks up everything metallic. It’s especially good at the end of the day when everyone’s packing up and the last thing you want is to get a flat from a rogue nail.
Every workshop should have one – it’s like the most underrated quiet achiever in the shed.
Magnet B88F
This one surprised me. It’s just a tidy, all-purpose magnet – nothing fancy. But once I started using it for basic positioning and temporary holds, I found myself reaching for it more and more. Great for holding up sheet metal, jigs, or keeping tools in place when I’m halfway up a ladder.
We brought it in as a bit of a test, but honestly, I’d rate it as one of those simple “once you use it, you get it” kind of products.
Magnet 36mm x M6
I love this one for custom setups. The M6 thread makes it super versatile – whether you’re bolting into it, mounting something temporarily, or just need a low-profile hold. I’ve seen blokes use these in creative ways on jigs and lifting setups. It’s the kind of magnet that quietly solves problems without needing to shout about it.
And since we stock it locally, you don’t have to wait a week for something this useful to land in the mail.
Magnet Hook 48mm
Honestly, I reckon everyone needs at least two of these. We use them all over the warehouse – to hang extension cords, welding leads, air hoses. I’ve even got one in the ute holding a bundle of recovery straps. Strong enough to hold serious weight, but easy to move if you need to shift your setup. We’ve got a few left in stock. And we can always get more if you're keen.
32mm Grip Grab Magnet
This is the one that sneaks up on you. Tiny, cheap, and weirdly strong. I’ve used it to grab plate off the floor, hold washers mid-job, or even just keep parts from rolling off the bench. You’d think something this small wouldn’t get much use – but every time I lose it, I’m straight back looking for a spare.
It’s the little workhorse you throw in a drawer and end up using every other day.
Pub test pass with flying colours.
We use this gear, and we only bring in what actually works. These magnets are stocked right here in store, so you’re not waiting weeks for delivery or paying freight from across the country. If you need them today, we’ve got you sorted.
Swing by the shed or check them out below – these are the kind of simple, useful tools you’ll wonder how you did without.
See you soon.
