Obsessed with being the best

Yer — I was that kid.

Growing up, I was obsessed with Dennis Lillee.

Not batsmen or captains.

Just the bowlers.

Fast bowlers.

The long run-up. The snap of the wrist. The belief that if you charged in hard enough, something magical would happen.

I had the posters.

I had the backyard pitch (dry dirt, uneven grass, questionable bounce and questionable brothers cheating in the crease any way they could to avoid my ruthless LBW balls.

And I had the absolute confidence of a wee tacker who thought he was one growth spurt away from the Baggy Green.

Of course, I was not.

But the obsession stuck.

The Spell I’ll Never Stop Mentioning

I think I still hold the trophy for best and fastest bowling figures - 4 for 10 off 3 overs.

Three overs where everything worked.

The ball listened.

The batsmen didn’t.

That little purple patch happened playing for Gindie Cricket Club — proudly (and probably over-confidently) known back then as the West Gindies.

That spell was not the beginning of a glittering career.

It was the highlight.

No contracts followed.
No national call-up.
Just a small trophy and a story that improves with age.

That's was enough for this little tacker.

Why We Back Capella Junior Cricket

That’s exactly why we’re proud to support Capella Cricket Club.

Grassroots sport isn’t glamorous. It’s early mornings. Dusty whites.

Volunteers doing five jobs at once.

That’s community sport right there. No spin. Just people turning up.

And those kids out there?

They don’t know yet which game will be their game.

Which spell will be their 4 for 10.

Which moment they’ll still be talking about 30 years later.

Jeez I could go on. 4 for 10...like it was yesterday....

Why This Stuff Matters

Cricket didn’t make me Dennis Lillee.

But it did teach me:

  • turn up
  • back your mates
  • handle the bad overs
  • celebrate the good ones

That sticks longer than a trophy ever will.

If a bit of sponsorship helps keep bats in hands, pads on legs and kids on the park — that’s money well spent.

A Nudge to Local Business

If you run a business in a regional town, you already know this...

Clubs like this don’t survive on good intentions.

They survive because someone chips in.

A set of shirts.
A few hundred bucks.
A sign on the fence.
A bit of backing that says, “We see you.”

It doesn’t need to be huge.
It just needs to happen.

Because one day those kids become apprentices, tradies, teachers, customers, employers — the next wave of the same community that supported them.

And that’s how communities stay strong.

Season kicks off again on the 31st.

No rest for the wicked.
Dusty whites.
Big dreams.

And somewhere out there, a kid is about to bowl three overs they’ll never forget.

That’s worth backing.

Go Capella!

Cheers - Craig

(the 4 for 10 kid- don't you forget it).
